The Longest Day Yet

I did end up working in studio Wednesday night for quite some time. And after talking to Marcel shortly I was feeling much better about my project and the direction I was headed in and decided to just get to it and start the project. I started some drawings but around 1am I decided to go to sleep for the night and start the exhausting studio work the next day.

28April2005 – Thursday

Thursday I got up at 7:30am and decided to get online for a few minutes before starting my exhausting studio work. Around 8-8:30ish I went to studio and began the longest day I’ve had here yet. I started working on drawings and after about an hour I decided to go on to the model and resolve more of the issues and details in 3d space and then fix the drawings from there. Before I knew it, the time had ticked away and it was 11am and almost time for Paolo’s class. I knew right away that I still had much too much work to do to spend time in a lecture so I quickly asked Paolo for permission to not attend his lecture that day and he gave it. So back to studio I went, and I worked through lunch, all the way up until dinner, and then after a 30 minute dinner continuously until about 3am when I could no longer see really and decided to take a short nap and hopefully lose the fuzziness from my sight.

29April2005 - Friday

At 7am my alarm woke me from my slumbering and grumpily I got out of bed, showered, and made it down to studio at about 7:45am and decided it was best to eat something so as not to die from starvation knowing that I wouldn’t be making it to lunch. About 8:15-8:30ish I started working on my project again and did so through lunch as I knew I would and finally finished my model at about 3:30pm. We were scheduled to be reviewed by the Profs at 4:30pm so I quickly started to retrace my drawings and finish all of the details I had finally worked out through building the model. Well the Profs had scheduled us so that each group was to have 20 minutes and then move on, but as we all knew it would, it ended up taking each group between 45 minutes and an hour and I had time to retrace and clean up the 3 drawings that I had by 6pm when we were finally up for our turn. We ended up talking to the Profs for about an hour and I’m still not exactly sure how my review went. They had good things to say at first but as the time they talked to me progressed the comments only got to be more bad and criticizing and they just kept talking longer and longer. Anyway once we were finished it was pretty much time for dinner and I was glad the dadgum project was finally over - well that phase at least. Dinner was good because I was pretty hungry and after dinner I got online for a while before going to my room and watching Win A Date With Tad Hamilton on my laptop. After the movie I was more awake than I should have been after only 3 hours of sleep for the last 40 or so hours, but none the less it was midnight and I was awake so I decided to use one of my handy dandy phone cards and call home. I talked to Kimberly a little and then my mom for about half an hour and then after I got off the phone I went back to my room. I think I finally ended up falling asleep somewhere between 1:30am and 2am.

30April2005 – Saturday

I slept until about 11:30am and then got up to use the restroom and upon deciding that I didn’t feel quite finished, I got back in bed and slept till around1:30. I got up and got showered and then went to see what everyone was up to for the day. I found a lot of people down in the courtyard sunning and relaxing so I went back to my room and changed into my shorts and went down to join them. I actually took my shirt off and sat in the sun watching some guys play spades and talking and laughing for at least a good hour before Gilbert and I went up to the Garden Underground to grab some lunch. The Garden Underground is this new place that opened up last week and was supposed to be pretty good so we gave it a try and it actually was pretty good. It’s in the main park of Castiglion and has a nice view of the park and right off the side of the mountain. After we finished eating we just sat and talked for a little while until I saw some girls heading to the gelato place around the corner and decided to follow them. I got some gelato and had a nice chat with them before walking back down to the center with Lauren and back to studio. I got to studio in perfect time to find Andrew and Kim just starting to work for the day on the next phase of our project that’s due Monday and it was about 4:30pm at the time. Well we argued and worked and I fixed some aspects of my model that the Profs suggested I change and we finished all of that at about 7pm. We decided at that point to take a break until after dinner and then meet again to finish arguing and fixing our master plan so that tomorrow we could start working on it and hopefully finish it tomorrow night. Now its 7:30pm and time for dinner so I suppose I’ll go eat and then head back to studio for yet another night of torture. I do plan on going to bed at a reasonable time and then, well, tomorrow I’m sure I’ll work all day long. So here’s to studio! ::Sigh::...
I hope you all are having a good weekend and will continue to have a good one. 7 days and counting... Ciao!

Festivus!

Sorry I haven’t really written in a while, but here’s a recap of my weekend and the first half of this week.

23April2005 – Saturday

I worked in studio all day long minus meals and going to sleep pretty late. I got online a few times randomly throughout the day, but for the most part not much else happened.

25April2005 – Monday

I decided to sleep in until just before lunch when I got up and showered and dressed, etc. After lunch I went and worked in studio up until class time. I just happened to be the first person seen by Peter because Peter started from the bottom of the roll and Marcel started at the top and they worked their way through alphabetically. Well by the time Peter was seeing me I had successfully built 2 rather large models, and had plan, section, and site drawings for both schemes. I hadn’t quite made it to a third variation like I was supposed to though. I had started one, but hate it so scrapped it altogether and decided to just focus on the two. Well, my review went pretty good. It went very well actually. Peter liked a lot of aspects of both variations but felt that one worked better and had more potential. He ended up tearing apart my model, which rather upset me, but apparently he was in a destructive mood that day because he ended up doing the same to every one else’s that he saw as well. Anyway, we talked about ways I could improve it and the new direction he wanted me to take the design to improve on it and then I talked to a structural engineering guy that’s his buddy and he invites to a lot of our reviews about my structural ideas, etc. By the time we were finished I felt really good about things and decided to blow off the rest of the day. I didn’t do much else after that really, I went to dinner and after dinner I watched people play spades for a while and talked on the internet a little before going to bed.

26April2005 – Tuesday

I got early before my alarm clock and decided to talk online till I had panned to get up. Then I went and took a shower and got dressed and ready for class. When I got to class I found out that Paolo had some things come up suddenly that he couldn’t get away from so instead Debra (one of the head staff here) took the time to have us all do class evaluations, and paperwork we needed to complete for the end of the semester coming up. This ended up taking most of the class time and then we went to lunch. The day was really gorgeous and after lunch a lot of us just went outside and hung out in the courtyard in the sun. We played with the turtles and listened to music, and some people played music and we all just had a good time. Also, the students here were putting on a Children’s Festival that evening in the main city piazza so I helped some of the people with laboring work such as moving chairs and boards and booths and things up flights of stairs and helping Jen to wipe down and clean chairs and things like that. Finally at about 3 we decided to go ahead and make our way down to stone carving and we had a beautiful walk. The day really couldn’t have been much more gorgeous. We took a lot of pictures in stone carving that day and had a really good time as we worked for our last day there. When we left we had talked to him about coming back next week and I think we’re going to. I got back in time to go straight to the Children’s Festival and had the time of my life. All I really did was wonder around taking pictures of everything and soaking up all of the joy that the children were producing. They had a fantastic time and the whole thing ended up being a huge success. It really was an indescribable experience, I love children so much – they really are the true joy in life I hope some day I have a bunch of my own! After the festival we pretty much unloaded everything wed loaded up that afternoon and then went straight to dinner. I wasn’t really feeling hungry so I didn’t eat much and then after dinner I watched Forrest Gump with a big group in the student lounge. This was the first time I ever really realized how sad that movie really is and I really did come close to crying multiple times throughout it. I guess the times and things we are going through in our own lives affect how we view things on the big screen huh? Well anyway, after the movie I talked online for a while before Jon roped me into going to The Velvet with him. Surprisingly, I did have a really good time and a lot of nice conversations and stuff before making my way home and to bed around 3am.

27April2005 – Wednesday

Today I slept till right noon and then got showered and dressed and met with the studio. The Profs took us to lunch today down at a pizzeria/café at our site for the project and we ended up having a nice lunch till about 4pm when I got back. At this point I was still dead tired so I took a nap until 7pm at which point I got up and came down here to get online and then decided to journal. I wasn’t too hungry tonight because I was still full from lunch so I skipped dinner and once I finish updating here and my pictures of Tuesday I plan to work on studio and perhaps call home for a bit. Well that’s really all I have, hope you are all having a good week, we’ll see how the rest of mine goes, but either way as of tomorrow I only have 8 days left till I’m home! Ciao!

Blah Day

22April2005 - Friday

Friday… I woke up on my own and yet again deprived my alarm of pleasure showered and got dressed and was finished right on time for my meeting with Paolo today. Everyone in the class scheduled a time on Tuesday to meet with him to talk about how we felt the class was going, the trip, whatever. My time was around 10:10am this morning and as I walked up they were opening the door and ready, so I’d say I had good timing. Either way the meeting lasted all of about 5 minutes. In which time we discussed the things previously mentioned and he informed me that based on what I’d turned in and how I’d performed on the test I’d be receiving an A in his class. Nice. Now I know that I’m going to get an A in for sure in 2 out of my 3 classes this semester which is good news. The third class, however, is my studio and well… at this point I would gladly take a B although I haven’t a clue how it’s going at all. Anyway, after my meeting I went to studio and worked for a while until lunch time and then I went and ate lunch. After lunch I was feeling kind of full and sleepy so I took a nap for a few hours and then returned to studio to work some more. I could only do it for about an hour though because my desk faces a wall and I get so blah just sitting there staring at a wall that’s 2 feet away while I am trying to work. So I ended up moving to Andrew’s desk for the time being since he won’t be back till Monday. After that I felt better because then I could see people, sunlight coming through a window, life really. Well I worked for a little while and then I got distracted and lost my motivation and decided to go get online and write an e-mail. I ended up chatting right through dinner, although from what I heard I wouldn’t have eaten much anyway, and up until about 9pm here. After that I decided to give studio another shot and shortly after gave up again. I decided that I needed some mental stimulation so I started watching Fight Club on my computer. Finally I got some inspiration and some ideas after laughing a little and relaxing some and I started to draw some more and around midnight I talked to Melanie about my project some and she helped me a little. Around 1:15am I decided I’d had enough for the night and came in her to journal and maybe chat a little before I go to bed and start this whole studio thing again tomorrow. So now I’m finished, another day has passed, and I pretty much have one of my three variations decided upon. Hopefully by midday tomorrow I’ll be finished with it and be able to start my next variation, and hopefully finish that before tomorrow is over. Man I hope I get some divine inspiration and motivation. Well either way, that’s all I have for tonight. I love and miss everyone and as of today I believe I have 14 days left, so let the countdown begin. Ciao!

...Softly Call The Muster...

20April2005 – Wednesday

Wednesday I was supposed to go on a scheduled field trip as you will see clearly on my calendar of important events. Instead, I did not. We had the field trip to Ravenna on Monday and to be quite honest I just didn’t feel like going on another one. Usually we have to write a paper for every field trip that we go on, but because of the Ravenna trip we had the option of writing on either place. So I’ll just write on Ravenna and not worry about it. Wednesday was a pretty blah day actually. I got up and got online and journaled about Tuesday, that didn’t really take too long though. After I got off line I ended up going to lunch with about 4 other people that hadn’t gone on the field trip either. After lunch I went up to my room and watched Thirteen Days on my laptop, and after that was over I took a nap until pretty close to dinner time. I was still pretty full from lunch when it was time for dinner so after a small portion of pasta I had had more than enough and retired to the lab for the evening. I pretty much just looked at course stuff for a few hours and checked a number of different things online that popped into my head until it was time for me to register – about 12:30am here. Well, I went ahead and registered and had all kinds of problems with the website and my classes, etc, etc. I finally ended up with a studio that wasn’t at the time I wanted, and 2 of the classes I did need, so overall I guess I’ll be fine. I’m supposed to get a job year around from now on, but my studio is now right in the middle of the day for 4-6 hours Monday, Wednesday, and Friday… lovely. Also I only registered for 12 hours because I couldn’t find another class anywhere that didn’t have a time conflict thanks to that lovely studio and because of the new tuition policy every student will be charged for a minimum of 15 hours no matter how many they take, so I was trying to get my moneys worth. In the end I went to bed fairly unsatisfied with the whole situation around 1:30am.

21April2005 – Thursday

I woke up around 9:30am denying my alarm clock the joy of waking me up at its scheduled 10:30am. Showered, dressed, and decided to go check my mail for a bit. After I was finished I bummed around till class time and then went to class. For the duration of class I tried to figure out my schedule situation and racked my brain for an answer to my problem. After class I went to lunch and then after lunch I went to the lab to check on a few classes. Yeah, still no ideas, nothing will fit still… After I was thoroughly disappointed by my schedule situation I went upstairs to nap until studio time. Again I woke up early denying my alarm clock its joy and went to studio early. I met with my group (well only Kim was there, so it was just the two of us) and we “discussed” what we were going to show the Profs for the day. Class started and we all got a pretty intense lecture and well, things aren’t looking good for the next week and a half. We have 3 deadlines and a lot of work between them and all before May 1st. I’m extremely thrilled, I assure you. Well after a while Marcel ended up talking to us for about an hour and it was probably the most productive and informative discussion I’ve had in studio all semester. After that Kim and I worked for the remainder of the class and then all the way up until dinner. Then I went to dinner and ate a little too much, but eh, who cares. After dinner I felt motivated to do absolutely nothing so I bummed around for an hour and a half till 10:00pm. At ten most of the Aggies still at the center all went to Regiro’s to Muster. For those of you that aren’t aware, April 21st is Muster which is pretty much the biggest tradition we have. To sum it up, Aggies all over the world meet to fellowship and remember those Aggies that died in the past year. We had some laughs tonight, told stories, read a poem that’s kind of traditional, and sang the Spirit Song. Even though we are 6000 miles away it’s kind of cool to see that the Aggie Spirit is thriving. Anyway, I just got back and decided to journal for the night and I’m thinking I might call it an early one. I have to meet with Paolo tomorrow morning (everyone in the class does actually at scheduled times) and then I have a very long weekend ahead of studio work and not a much fun it seems. My trip to Capri has officially been canceled due to studio, so next weekend is going to be pretty similar it seems. Anyway, that’s all I have for tonight, this night of rich Aggie Spirit and Tradition.

Why Are Tuesdays The Worst Day Of The Week For Me?

19April2005 - Tuesday

I don’t really want to talk about Tuesday. Tuesday wasn’t a good day for me. I don’t need to journal it here to remember it, I know I will. But just to give you something… I went to my class; I turned in my paper on time; I went to lunch; I took a nap; I went to stone carving; I finished my project in stone carving; it hailed, poured down rain, and the temperature dropped significantly while I was in stone carving; I froze and got soaked walking back in my flip-flops – bad day to wear flip-flops; I took a shower; I got dressed; I went to dinner; I had a really surreal night. That’s about it, I’ll update later tonight on the goings on of Wednesday – once I’ve actually had one. Miss you all… Ciao!

A Day In Ravenna

“Hey guys, it’s like 7…” Dangit Daniel… He was supposed to get me and Wes up at 6:45am so we had more than enough time to get dressed and get to the bus in time. Well, I got dressed with lightning speed and made it there well before 7:30am and in plenty of time to wait on the bus to get there – in the freezing cold weather. Soon enough the bus was there and I was one of the first ones jumping on. I found a seat, got comfortable, turned on the mp3 player, and slipped away back into the sleep that had been interrupted for all the mess explained above. Somewhere between 10:30 and 11:00am we arrived in Ravenna and while I hadn’t slept the best on the bus, I had slept some. We got off the bus and started our grand walk through the city to our first stop, a Byzantine church. Just for all of you that don’t know, Ravenna is pretty much the center for Byzantine architecture so I’ll go ahead and tell you all of what we saw pretty much was. We entered a church and I really absolutely loved it. I’m not usually a fan of Byzantine, but I was a fan of this church. After I took some pictures we moved on to the outside in a courtyard adjacent to the church and visited a small mausoleum there. Then we went back through the church where I took more pictures, this time trying without the flash (it was really dark in there) and then we left and continued our walk to another part of the city. Here we visited a baptistery that was built by some priest that started the Aryan movement (yes, this is where Hitler got the name) and it was a movement that said that Christ was only a man so it had one of the 2 mosaics in existence that portray him as such and therefore totally nude. Honestly, I wasn’t impressed, but whatever. After this we walked across the city again to another church that was pretty cool, it had a totally flat roof which we hadn’t seen yet and the entire roof was coffered. Anyway I actually got a few souvenirs here for a few special ladies in my life that I still needed to get something for. (Mom, Mom#2, & Kimber.) After this church we made our way to another baptistery that was much smaller than the first and wasn’t all that interesting to me, and then we were finished. By this time it was well after noon and I was starving so I followed a group of people in search of sustenance. We finally found this little cafeteria place and the food was good and cheap. Both important, just by the by. After lunch I followed them some more in search of gelato and I finally found some and they disappeared. I then ran into a bunch of us in the main square sunning themselves and joined them. We killed a lot of time doing nothing and I sketched a little, listened to music, and chatted and then finally we went back to where we were supposed to meet to get on the bus. After some more waiting they got there and we all anxiously boarded. Again I tried to listen to music and sleep, but my thoughts had been haunting me all day. So I slept some and thought a lot while I listened to Jars of Clay, Project86, Living Sacrifice, and Switchfoot – 3 old groups and one new one and all very enjoyable. I’ve actually been listening to them all a LOT the last few weeks and I think its helping something, I’m not really sure what though. Anyway I was pretty much awake for the last hour of the way home and jumped off the bus to race back to the center and pee. Then I went to dinner and now I’m here. I think we’re planning on working on our project a little, a little later, but I’m not sure. We’re all pretty pissed about studio right about now because we’ve yet to start the final phase of this project which is where we split off on our own and design an entire building from the ground up with every possible drawing you could imagine and multiples of many. The problem is that we have a little over a week and a half left before it’s due, and like I said we haven’t started yet. This studio is such crap… I have nothing to show at the end of the semester. Probably not an A and definitely a bad attitude about the whole experience. But, on the plus side, we only have 18 days left before I’ll be home. THANK GOD! I am planning on going to Sorrento not this weekend but the next and probably Capri a little too, but Daniel and I haven’t started all of the technical planning as of yet. Soon though hopefully. Okay, that’s all I have for now, I hope you enjoy the pictures and the journal entries and thank you for the e-mails – I cherish them all, helps the time be a little happier. I love and miss everyone and I hope you guys have a great day and week. Ciao!

Cinque Terra - A Novel By CarlJames

As soon as I finished journaling Thursday night Dave tells me that Pontius is backing out on us because he has a field trip on Friday that he didn’t know about till Thursday afternoon and he’s not going to go. Great! Now the 3 of us are going to have to cover his payment both nights and we’ll all end up paying like 35 Euro a night… not cool… So about 2 hours later and a lot of talking and rearranging of schedules, etc, etc, etc, we were back on schedule, Pontius was back in, and everything was going to be fine. Daniel and I went up stairs and watched Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels just like we had planned and then crashed for about an hour and a half before Daniel’s alarm went off.

15April2005 – Friday

4:30am. Daniel jumps in the shower and I get dressed and finish packing and by 5am we are both dressed packed and down the stairs. We meet up with Cathcart, Tim, Jacob, and Matt in the lobby downstairs and head out on our adventure. We make our way down to the train station in the pitch black and crisp early morning air. Our train was running just a few minutes late, but nothing worth stressing over. We got on it just fine and made our way to Florence.

An hour and a half later we hit Florence Santa Maria Novella with an insatiable hunger. We descended upon the F.S.M.N. McDonald’s and had ourselves a hearty American breakfast. Egg & Sausage McMuffins, orange juice, and hash browns were had by all in the half hour we had between trains and before long we had boarded our train to La Spezia which we were pleased to discover was a sleeper. Cathcart, Tim, and I grabbed one and we folded down all of the seats to make 3 beds and we settled in to dream land for the hour and a half to two hour trip. We were awoken at the half hour mark by the guy asking for tickets who was raging about our shoes being on the seats, so we gave him the tickets and adjusted ourselves till he was satisfied and then we slipped back away. Sometime later Cathcart nudges me and says we’re there so I quickly grab my gear and we jump off the train anxious to find the next one. We all follow Daniel through a crowd of people while he searches for a departures schedule and we can’t find the train we’re supposed to take, it must be in a smaller station or in another part of this one! So he runs to information and we follow from a short distance and by the time we catch up to him he’s at the front of a crowd and we hear him scream, “Bin 4! Now! Run!” So we all bolt to Bin 4 and barely make it on the train but make it either way so now we’re sitting pretty and ready for the fun to start. On the train we met 3 girls from Philadelphia who were also going to Cinque Terra and they were friendly.

Soon the train stopped but we were in a dark tunnel so we figured that surely this wasn’t the stop, Riomaggiore was the first one and where we were all planning on getting out, but the train was stopped in a tunnel, so we figured we were just waiting for the train in front of us to move. To our surprise the train started moving again and went through Riomaggiore and kept going… uh-oh. The next stop, however, was Manarola which was where the rest of the group was supposed to have a hostel so we decided we’d get off their and go with them to find their hostel first. This time when the train stopped we made sure to get off and after walking through a long, run down tunnel we came out in Manarola.

Tim had the address that he was given by the girl who booked the hostel (actually they had rented an apartment for the weekend) and was asking some people if they knew the address. Soon enough we were told to go up this set of stairs and something else, so we started up the stairs until we reached a little fountain and cleared space and appeared to be lost. Tim found another woman and asked again and we were told to go up more to a piazza in front of a church at the top of the hill and something else I didn’t hear and soon we were climbing more stairs. We finally see a church and make our way there and now we’re stuck again, so we ask a guy shoveling concrete into a wheelbarrow and he says it’s down the hill to our left… okay… so we go down the hill and guess where we end up. Right back where we started! Grr…

Okay, so Cathcart takes things into her hands and asks a guy if he speaks English and then for directions and he says to go back up to the church and it’s to the left. So we go back up the hill to the church and then past it and we are looking all over the place to the left but we don’t see it. Soon we realize we’re leaving the main city area so again Cathcart asks a guy if he speaks English and for directions. This time the guy says he’ll show us, it’s just around the corner. So we follow him and it turns out we walked right passed it 3 times, lol! So we’re all sitting outside as Tim finally knocks on the door and we tell them reservations. The woman looks at us totally bewildered and says that she knows we have reservations, but that she is the travel agent and the reservations are for Corniglia. Oh my… so she gives us directions and sends us on our way. When we get to the train station Daniel and I decide we’re going to go to our hostel which is back in Riomaggiore and that the rest of the group is going on to there’s in the next town Corniglia and that they’d call us later and we’d figure things out from there.

So Daniel and I get on our train and head back towards La Spezia and this time when the train stops in the tunnel we jump out and it paid off because we’d finally arrived. We met an Aggie class of ’93 right when we got off of the train with his wife, which was fun (they picked out my shirt in the crowd) and then soon after we found our way to the main street and started walking up looking for our hostel. Luckily the street our hostel was on was the main street and a few minutes later we spotted it to the left with no problems. We were already doing a hundred times better than the other group, lol! Well there was a man and woman sitting outside talking and as we walked up the man asked if he could help us, so we told him reservation. He said to take a seat and that his brother was the owner and that he’d be right back. So Daniel and I took a seat on a really cool bench that was about 2 feet away and waited for the guy to show up. About 15 minutes later he did, and we got checked in no problem. He grabbed the keys and said that he had to bump us up to a 6 bed private apartment but that there was no extra charge. Okay, lol!

So we followed him down the street, to the right and up 6 flights of stairs and then he unlocked first one door and then another and said here you are. We walked in and were amazed at what we saw. There were two main bedrooms, a dining/living room, a kitchen with appliances and dishes and a split bathroom so someone could shower while other people used the toilette and sink at the same time. In the living/dining room there was an extra bed and a couch that were both made up as beds and as we looked around we decided that this place was more than 6 beds. One of the beds was a king size and we could easily fit 3 people in it… We soon discovered that we were in an 8 bed private apartment and it had a gorgeous view out of our windows of the mountain behind us and of the city. So the owner left and we thanked him and settles in and Daniel and I both called the king bad at the same time. We ended up sharing it the whole weekend because it was huge and extremely comfortable.

After we settled in and changed into shorts we decided that we had ignored our stomachs for long enough and went in search of some food. We found a Pizzeria a little past the hostel office and it was priced pretty well so we both ordered a pizza and ended up eating it on some big public stairs just to the right of the Pizzeria - we call that Cortona style, lol! Anyway once we finished eating we decided to do a little exploration and started hiking up the main road. We followed it as it curved to the right and then the left and soon found ourselves high up on the mountain with spectacular views. We took a ton of pictures and were psyched when we finally saw the beach we’d heard about in Riomaggiore. That was our next stop and we found a trail of stairs that headed back into the city and it ended up putting us right in front of our apartment building in about 5 minutes. Heck of a short cut.

Soon we found our way down to the coast line with no problems and not long after we found the man made cove and the pebble beach. It was all ridiculously beautiful and we were having a great time. And it was only 1pm! Before long we had made our way out onto the giant rocks of the man made cove and the sea was calm and peaceful and the sun was shining warm and beautiful and then next thing we knew we were stripping off layers of clothes and laying out on some of the smooth rocks. Glorious!

Somewhere between a half an hour and an hour later we got a call from the other two guys that were staying with us, Dave and Pontius, saying that they were about to be there and what was up. So we told them we’d meet them soon since we had the keys and forced ourselves to get up an get dressed again and head back in. soon we found them and took them up to our awesome place and they were just as impressed as we were. They were a little hungry and Daniel and I could use a snack after all the hiking so we decided to go grab something before we did anything else. We grabbed a small slice at a place right around the corner and as we were eating decided we wanted to hike over to Corniglia where the other groups were staying. Once we finished we showed the guys the way down to the shore and up to the trail that we’d seen and the next thing we knew we were starting our biggest adventure of the weekend.

We leisurely strolled along the coastline trail which was more of a well groomed park path really. Before long we back at the train station of Riomaggiore which was a big central point for the trails. We wanted to go on to Corniglia but first we had to go to Manarola. Well we couldn’t just get on the trail because they were actually checking tickets at this entrance to it, so we broke down and decided to buy them. We found out that just to go from Riomaggiore to Manarola was 3 Euro, but the all day pass was 5.40 Euro. It was already about 4pm but we decided to go ahead and buy the day pass because it was good on all of the trails and the train and we didn’t want to have to pay another 3 Euro at the trail from Manarola to Corniglia as well and get totally ripped off. So we started our hike and soon found ourselves on another manicured park path. Not long after that we were in Manarola and we started looking for the next trail. We found out that the coastline trail from Manarola to Corniglia was out of commission due to a rock slide last week so being the strapping young lads that we are we decided we could do the more skilled mountain trails. We asked around how to get to them and finally a guy pointed us up the hill to them and again another guy pointed us to them, but this guy made sure he told us to be careful that they were dangerous. Well we weren’t scared of a few trails and we finally found the beginning of trail 6 and compared to our map to make sure it was the right one.

We started our hike and soon found that these were definitely not the beginner paths. We went up about a million stairs and 45 minutes later on this somewhat less than manicured stair path we reached the top of the mountain and one little city that was a connector for the mountain trail. We searched for a little while and finally found where the path started again and as we started the next leg of our hike we realized quickly that this was definitely not taken care of in any way and was definitely more of the expert level trail. We didn’t mind though and were having a great time. We were walking along paths that were sometimes a foot wide, some times 6 inches wide along cliff sides with 100 meter drop offs and down stairs that were extremely steep and also 6 inches wide, etc. it was a lot of fun and we had some spectacular photo opportunities. About an hour later we were expecting to be there but instead saw Corniglia far below us and the trail heading forth plunging into the forest.

Fearing nothing we plunged with it and soon found ourselves on an even more expert path and hiking further up into the mountains. At last probably another hour later we came to a sign on the path that said 7a one way and 6 the other. We checked our map and sure enough 7a was the trail we were supposed to take down to Corniglia so we excitedly started climbing. We figured it had to go up first a little ways or something before it started going down but 45 minutes later we were all ragged and climbing the most difficult “trail” any of us had encountered and were hoping for a stop in sight soon. Luckily about 15 minutes later we found a highway and crossed it to sit on a short wall on the other side. We pulled out the trusty map and tried to figure out where the heck we were and where we could have possibly gone wrong. Right where we had emerged onto the highway was a sign pointing back into the forest saying 7a and Corniglia and we were extremely confused.

After looking at the map we finally discovered that the first piece we had taken on 7a was actually a ‘T’ and went both up and down and somehow we didn’t see the down path. On the map the piece we had just taken up was dashed, not solid, and when we checked the key we discovered that this particular path was one of the expert professional tracks that was extremely dangerous and only recommended for Olympic mountain climbing professionals. Geez! So at this point we found on the map the next leg of the journey which was trail 7b which did lead down to Corniglia and we took a few deep breaths and headed in the direction it appeared to be from the map. We had started trail 6 in Manarola at 5pm and it was now after 8pm and we were just following the roadside. About half an hour later we finally saw the sign that said 7b and pointed down into the valley and we took a sigh of relief.

At this point Pontius said he didn’t want to take the trail back down because, as we all were, he was run ragged and he knew that going down was harder than going up. Daniel and I looked at each other in disbelief because first of all we had been hiking for almost 4 hours and we couldn’t believe he wanted to give up now, and secondly, who on earth has ever heard of going down a trail to be harder than going up one? Climbing is definitely harder than going down! So Dave offered to stay with him and they were going to hitch a ride down to Corniglia and they’d call us when they got there and meet us there. Whatever, Daniel and I were determined to finish what we’d started, with or without them – and we were the ones that had literally been hiking all day long, lol!

So we started down and soon the trail disappeared completely. We couldn’t find it anywhere, so… as any resourceful Aggie would, we made our own trail! This trek of the hike was definitely the hardest and Daniel and I were both glad that they other guys hadn’t come because there was no way they’d have toughed it out. There were a countless number of times that the ground right beneath our feet just fell away and we’d slide a few yards before regaining our balance. At one point we came to a 12 foot drop off and didn’t see any way down in sight, so Daniel and I just looked at each other, I said “Rocks?” With determination in his voice he replied, “Rocks.” And the next thing you knew without any hesitation we both started scaling down this vertical rock wall with absolutely no equipment. It was the best time of our lives! We both agreed that that was easily the high point of the hike and we continued our way down the mountain. Finally we found another highway and wouldn’t you know right across the street there was another sign denoting 7b with an arrow pointing and an obvious path starting up again. We didn’t know where the other one lead to this, we couldn’t find it anywhere, but assumed it must have been somewhere further up the road.

We decided to go ahead and take 7b and it soon turned into one of the well kept sissy paths that we had started on when we were in Manarola, lol! About half an hour after we left the guys at the top of the mountain we had made it to Corniglia, rested for a few minutes, knocked the rocks out of our shoes, and started down to the train station when we got a call from Dave. He was calling to let us know that they had just gotten picked up, to find out where we were and where we wanted to meet them. We said we were heading to the train station and they could meet us there. After climbing down a staircase that never ended we finally hit solid land and walked down to the train station to find Dave and Pontius sitting on a bench waiting for us looking quite fresh. ::Sigh::…

We got on a train at about 9:45pm that was supposed to be there at 9:30pm and rode it back to Riomaggiore. We never did hear from anyone in the other groups but we’d had a spectacular day either way. When we got back to Riomaggiore we ate dinner at one of the 3 restaurants still open (at 10pm mind you) and ate to our hearts content. It wasn’t the most peaceful dinner because at the table right next to us was a group of about 6 American girls and they were being extremely loud and obnoxious. After dinner we went back up to the apartment and ended up crashing for the night right away.

16April2005 – Saturday – Happy Birthday Darling!

Daniel and I were planning on getting up at 9am and going to Monterosso to get on the beach nice and early and have a very relaxing day of sunbathing. However, when 9am came around Daniel got up and looked outside to find it raining so he got back in bed, we rolled over, and slept till 10:30am. Again Daniel got up to find rain so he got back in bed, we rolled over again and slept till 11:30am. At 11:30 we got up having slept about 12 hours and felt great.

It wasn’t raining anymore and I was feeling confident that the day was going to be beautiful before long. So we got dressed and headed down to the train station. The other guys had stayed up later and were still sleeping as far as we knew and were planning on catching up with us later on in the day. So Daniel and I got to the train station only to find that the train we had looked up the night before wasn’t running today so we had to kill an hour. We decided to go over to the cove and see what was going on there and found huge waves and a lot of really awesome photo-ops.

The train was leaving at 2:11pm and at about 1:45pm we started back over to the station. As we were getting back into the station Daniel joked that it would be really funny if we saw the guys waiting there and as soon as the words slipped out of his mouth, there they came around the corner, lol! So we all got on the train and went to Monterosso and I was praying for sunshine. Well when we got off the train nothing had changed, it was cold, windy, the waves were crashing into everything spectacularly, and it was starting to sprinkle. At this point we were all pretty hungry and decided to go into the town and search for some food.

We walked up and down 2 streets before finally finding a pizza place that was really cheap. Daniel and I both got two pizzas and Dave and Pontius each got one. They were hand tossed and home made right in front of our eyes and were magnificent! After eating till we were ready to burst (Dave had to finish a 3rd of my second one) we headed out to a Piazza right above the beach and Daniel and I took some pictures. At this point Dave and Pontius wondered away and left us a lone, so we decided to hike up this one part of the coast trail and see the view. We found this really cool old turret looking thing and decided to spend some time there watching the waves and soaking up the sun that had peaked through some of the rain clouds.

Daniel and I sat there for a good half hour having a good time and watching some enormous waves before one totally surprised us and splashed about 6 feet over our heads totally soaking our right sides. We couldn’t help but laugh and wonder how huge that wave must have been because we were easily a hundred meters above the water. We decided at that point to leave and go back towards the boardwalk by the train station. As we did so I suggested gelato and those were words of music to both our ears. Daniel got 5 different flavor scoops and I got 3 and we strolled along enjoying our gelato and trying to warm up a little – great way to do it huh? Lol!

Soon we were getting restless and called Dave and Pontius to see where they were and see if they wanted to go back to Riomaggiore since they had the keys. We met them about 2 seconds later (they had been just down the boardwalk) and Pontius told us he’d lost his camera bag and remembered where he’d left it and wanted to go back and see if it was there. Daniel and I said we’d go check the train schedule and catch up to them and we found the next one leaving in a little over half an hour.

5 minutes later we found them and they had successfully recovered the lost camera bag. We had time to kill so we decided to hike to the top of the hill right next to us and also on the coast really quickly and take some pictures and we ended up finding a really cool statue of St. Francis of Assisi, lol! The view was really nice though and we took a lot of pictures before heading back down to the train station and getting on our train with ease.

Dave and Pontius decided that they wanted to stop in Vernazza which was the next stop and only town we hadn’t been to yet, but Daniel and I were anxious to get back and see if the weather had cleared up enough for sunbathing. We had seen Riomaggiore from the top of the mountain and it was bathed in sunlight with clear skies for as far as we could see, so we were hopeful about getting some sun in even though it was after 5pm. We got back and decided to go to the Co-Op first to get some choice beverages for the evening and then to the room to drop all of our stuff and then we made our way to the coastline. When we got there we found nothing but the same old same old and decided to heck with it. We bought a deck of cards and I got a phone card for later that night and we went back upstairs. It was about 6 by this time and we decided, to heck with it, lets open the beverages and mix us up a little something and play cards.

We had one glass and had just finished a game of war when Dave and Pontius walked in the door with a bag of groceries. They were going to cook pasta and Daniel and I looked at each other and both knew food was a great idea. We checked the time and realized the Co-Op would be closing any minute so we ran down stairs and made it in time to buy some cheese, bread, meat and chips. We went back up stairs and as soon as we got in I realized it was about the time I wanted to call JereBeth and wish her a happy birthday so I went back downstairs and figured out how to use the Happiness Card for about 10 minutes and finally got hold of her. We talked for about a half an hour and I burned up the card, but it was only 5 Euro and by far the best deal for the phone problem so far, so I was more than pleased. It sounded like she was going to have a good day but I was bummed to find out that the package I sent her priority on Monday didn’t make it there in time for her birthday. I hope it got there later that day or gets there soon…

After I finished on the phone I went back up the six flights of stairs again and found that the guys had already eaten and were talking. So I sat down and ate and Daniel and I had some more beverage and we all talked for a while and then decided on an exciting game of spades to cap off the night right. It was a lot of fun and Daniel and I ended up coming back from negative to win it by a nice margin and before the night was over wed finished off the entire bottles of beverages between the two of us. I was feeling very nice and since it was a little after midnight, we all decided to hit it for the night. Daniel and I ended up talking for like an hour or two before we went to sleep and this morning when 8am rolled around we felt pretty good.

17April2005 - Sunday

We got up, got packed, washed up, got dressed, and were out of there by 9am. We checked out and then had decided the night before that we were going to go to Vernazza this morning. So we got on the train and made it over there by 9:45am and started strolling around. I found a really cool Cinque Terra patch for my patch collection and we took some pictures of the city and the coast. I’ve never actually seen a duck in the ocean before, but I did today, lol!

One of the big things in Vernazza it this old castle with a big tower at the top of the main hill in the city so Daniel and I decided we’d check that out. We followed the signs and climbed to the gate only to find it locked and a sign saying they didn’t open till 10:30am. Well our train was leaving for home at 10:46am so we were cutting it close, but we were sure we’d be okay. So we killed time just exploring for about 20 minutes and then at about 10:25am the woman opened the gate a little early and we were the first ones up the tower. The view was amazing and we quickly snapped a dozen shots before running down to the train station.

We got to the station with tons of time to spare so I went to use the restroom while Daniel double checked the train times and bin number. When I get back, what do I see, Daniel surrounded by the three Philadelphia girls from on the way in, lol! So we chatted a little and found out that they were still friendly and had had a nice weekend as well. We all got on the same train and separated when we got to the main station in La Spezia.

Daniel and I quickly found the next train out and ran to the bin because it was supposed to be leaving any minute, but we found the bin empty and no train, so we relaxed and waited around. While we were waiting a lot of people from the other groups started straggling onto the bin and we all had nice reunions and found out how others’ weekends had gone. Soon the train arrived and Daniel and I claimed a sleeper car right away. We didn’t see anyone else from the group for the whole train ride and when we got to Pisa we saw them get out. So we all grouped together and some people decided to go to the famous tower and 6 of us, including Daniel and I, were going to go ahead and make our way to Florence then.

At 12:30pm the train got there and we made our way to Florence. We got there and discovered the next train leaving for Arrezo at 2pm. That was half an hour away and we were starving so the four guys all went to good ole McDonalds and the girls left us to go do some shopping in Florence. The food was good but when we were finished we found out that the train we were going to take wasn’t running on Sunday and searched for the next possible. Luckily there was one that had a stop in Arrezo leaving at 2:09pm so we just got on that one, no problems.

About an hour later we got to Arrezo and got off the train to go see when the next train going to Castiglion Fiorentino was leaving. It was starting rain and to our horror we found out that the train we just got off of was going to Castiglion Fiorentino! It hadn’t listed all of the stops in Florence and the train pulled away as we watched solemnly… We looked up the next train to find it leaving in over an hour and then one of us got the bright idea to just take the bus!

We were well aware that there was a train that went from Arrezo to Cortona that stopped in Castiglion Fiorentino at a piazza that was very close to the center. So we all happily walked to the bus stop in the rain and less than 10 minutes later we were bopping along on a nice warm and dry bus. It took about half an hour to get to the piazza when it was all over with, but it would have taken us an extra 15 minutes to hike up the dadgum hill, maybe more because of the rain, anyway so we figured that was perfect and we were finally back.

We finally got back into the center at about 4pm and after using the facilities I made my way down to the lab to get started on the lengthy update to my journal that I had to look forward to. At 7:35pm I realized dinner was starting to I went to eat real quick and then half an hour later I was back here to finish up. I’ve been simultaneously trying to upload all of my pictures to the web as well and now I’m just about finished with everything.

I hope you all enjoyed reading my short novel about Cinque Terra; I know I enjoyed living it! I love and miss everyone and look forward to the hundreds of e-mails, messages, and comments I’ll be receiving in the short time to come. Tomorrow we have the rescheduled trip to Ravenna and I’m sure that will prove to be a long day. We have to be on the bus at 7:30am for about a 5 hour bus ride, so I’m more than sure it’ll prove to be a long day, lol! That’s all I’ve got for now, look forward to hearing from everyone!

Ciao!

Happy Birthday Baby!

Here we go for the last two days, deep breath, and...

13April2005 – Wednesday

I woke up at about 7:30 and got dressed rather quickly. Quicker than I had intended when I woke up at this godforsaken hour, that’s for sure. So I went downstairs and checked my e-mail and then decided I may as well see about breakfast. My stomach was killing me so I thought food might help, well I quickly discovered it didn’t so much, so I stopped eating I decided to live with the pain – nothing too unusual as of late… I went back upstairs and got the rest of my things together while I waited for Daniel to finish eating and then went back downstairs to wait for him. We ended up having to run to the station (literally) because of Daniels second breakfast, which is really something I was trying to avoid. Anyway, we made it to the train station with time to spare and got on. The thing was full so we ended up in first class, darn the luck. Eventually we got to Florence where we all headed in what we thought was the general direction of the Academia. Eventually we did get there with only one wrong turn and we were actually there early. Well I was feeling really dehydrated so I went with a few people to a bar close by (Bars aren’t the same here as they are in the states, just FYI. Bars are more like places where they sell food and drinks, I don’t really know how to explain it better than that.) where I got some water and decided to give the food thing another shot since it had been nearly an hour and a half and my stomach felt different but still not so great. Well the food helped a little although I only got to eat half my calzone before we went in. Soon we did go into the Academia though, and really the only things worth seeing there were The Slaves by Michelangelo and his extremely famous David. Wow. Just, wow. It was quite an experience. The David was quite the piece of art work, and although I’ve seen two fakes and a thousand pictures and statuettes of it since we got here, seeing the real thing was somehow different. And since that was really the focal point of the Academia, I probably observed The David for a good half hour to 45 minutes. Soon after seeing there was nothing else worth looking at around though, I left and found a group of people outside. I finished my calzone as we walked and they headed to some famous little sandwich shop they’d heard about. When we got there I saw the funniest sign ever for “Slow Food” as opposed to American fast food, and you’ll find that on my picture site. After they got their food and I grabbed a few more bottles of water from the “Asia Market” across the street, (not Asian Market mind you…) we headed off to the Florence Duomo to sit and enjoy their lunch. We did so for about an hour while I again had some lovely time to bask in the sun and again you’ll find pictures, lol. After we finished that the group split up a little in to one really small group and then the rest of us and the rest of us headed to the Ponte Vecchio which was that famous bridge with shops down both sides that I’ve mentioned before. We hung out around there for quite some time looked at shops, basked in the sun some more, killed time, you know, stuff college kids do. Soon enough it was about time for us to head over to the Uffizi which is the biggest most famous museum in Florence - although id never really heard of it, lol. For whatever reason we ended up waiting in the little courtyard area there for a good 45 minutes before going in being scanned by security and then going up 4 huge flights of stairs… Once we finally got to the main exhibition hall we were split up into smaller groups with tour guides…vomit. Our tour guide was a woman with a very annoying voice who would take us to one painting ignoring all the others in the room and talk in front of it for half an hour then move to the next room. Well, I hate tour guides so I ignored her from the start and was wondering around n my own looking at the paintings and at first I’d wait for the group in each room or the following room. Soon I tired of this though and started exploring on my own a little ahead of the group. I went to the restroom at one point (which was on the opposite side of the museum) and came back to find them only just then getting to the room I had last seen. After this I conspired with a few of the girls to take off on our own (namely The Trio) and for whatever reason I lost them for a while but went ahead and kept looking at the paintings and soon found them again in the main hall. The guide had totally skipped the series of rooms I’d just gone through! So sad… anyway I was exhausted by this point and I had already seen some extremely famous paintings. Just to name a few, I saw The Venus, Leonardo Di Vinci’s first Painting, and a Madonna by Giotto that we’ve seen a number of times in classes. Well at this point I was finished, and so was The Trio so we really did conspire and took off early. We found out there was a train leaving at 4:26pm so we decided to give it a shot. Well once we all exited the museum – which was a maze and a half to do, I feel sorry for anyone caught in there during a fire because they’re dead – stopped in the courtyard outside and planned our strategy. The Trio had a few things to get real quick, and so did I, but we were headed in opposite directions so we decided to split up and meet at the train station. Well I got my souvenirs, which I really want to talk about because I think they’re really cool but I don’t want to ruin anyone’s surprise! Then I speed walked the entire city of Florence to get to the train station and made it in 10 minutes! 10 minutes! Florence is not small by any means, and I was on the opposite side of it from the train station, so I was thoroughly impressed with myself – although my shins are still killing me tonight over 24 hours later. Well I was there with 6 minutes to spare and started searching for the girls. I couldn’t find them anywhere nor could I find the train leaving at 4:26pm, but only one at 4:24pm. Well I missed it because I was frantically searching for them and almost gave up all hope when I checked the schedule again and realized there was a train going to Naples at 4:38pm and its first stop was Arrezo. This train was only making 4 stops which meant it was going to make it to Arrezo in extremely good time, so I thought id just meet them there. I ended up getting to Arrezo in 35 minutes when it usually would take over an hour, lol, so I decided id just hop on the next train to Castiglion which left about 5 minutes later. In the end it took me about half the time it usually would to get back to Castiglion Fiorentino and I made it back to the center by 5:50pm. When I got back I hung out with Jen for a while who hadn’t felt up to going for some reasons and we just kept each other company while we both wrote a paper. Right around 6:45pm everyone else got back and soon after I was asked politely to give them some privacy while they separated their laundry and I was more than happy to comply. I went and just relaxed on my bed until dinner. After dinner I watched Under The Tuscan Sun finally and I was pleased with it. I was still rather awake when it was over so I came down here to the lab and talked to Ma Mere (that’s my mother in French) before turning in for the night.

14April2005 – Thursday

I rolled out of bed very unhappily at 10:30am and got in the shower and then got dressed, etc. The construction outside of our room has finally stopped, but the people that like to walk the streets in the morning talking loudly to one another and the street cleaners have not… Anyway, I went to class and was there right up until lunch where I was pleased to find my favorite soup, but wasn’t pleased with the rest of the meal. So with my bowl of soup to fill me I said Adieu to my lunch companions and headed up to the studio followed shortly by Andrew. Marcel had talked to Kim at some point about our project and things went slightly less than well so we needed to meet and reassess the project and redesign it before class started at 3:00pm. Well it took a few hours and a lot of “compromising” because I finally stood up to Andrew and told him to stop taking over the project and listen to us and he backed off and we finally got things worked out a little bit. Anyway once class started we were finished and ready to be re-critiqued only for the profs to come in and say they were going to pass around a sign up sheet for crits. Dangit! So we got on it as soon as we could and were third in line - which to us meant that somewhere within the first hour of class we were going to be seen. So we waited around and I took a short nap in studio with the headphones on and somehow we got skipped, but soon enough they finally got to us. I say they, but I mean Peter because they had spilt up and while I’m not usually fond of Peter’s crits, he had mostly positive things to say, surprisingly. In the end he concluded that everything was pretty good, we’d done a good job, but he was concerned with one part that he felt we hadn’t developed quite enough. So he gave us a little research assignment to see some projects that had already been done by famous architects that to him were similar to our and he wanted us to see if we couldn’t take some of their ideas and incorporate it into our thoughts and design, etc, etc, etc. Kim and Andrew went and looked that up shortly while I showed the project to Melanie (the TA for anyone who’s forgotten) and soon after I was finished Andrew reemerged and said they were pretty much done. The profs had disappeared and I was bored out of my mind so I said I was taking off and he said that was cool. I went up stairs and took a short nap before dinner, which was fabulous. Then I went to dinner and it wasn’t bad either. We had steak for the first time here and it was great. I actually ate three pieces, mmm… After dinner I decided to come in here and update which I’ve been doing for quite some time now and in a sec. Daniel and I are going to watch Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels before we hit the sack for the night. Our train to Cinque Terra leaves at 5:30am so tomorrow is going to be a long weekend, but hopefully it’ll be fabulous. Things have been a little rough here as of late, so I could use a nice weekend to offset everything. I won’t be back till Sunday so I just want to go ahead and say an official HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to JereBeth. I hope it’s a spectacular one!
I love and miss you all and I hope you are all doing well, Ciao!

A Rather Testing Day...

Tuesday… ah, Tuesday. This morning my sleep was disturbed at 8am by the workers outside my window. I slept on and off and very horribly for the next 2 hours when my alarm went off. Daniel was already in the shower so I rested my eyes and listened to the loud mechanical noise trying not to think about anything at all and just relax. Around 10:30am Daniel got out of the shower and I got in. I took a slightly long shower, just soaking up the hot water and hoping the bad feelings inside my stomach would go away. On the plus side of things, my sinuses are working properly nowadays, I still have one days worth of medicine left to take, and nothing green is to be seen. After my shower I felt no better, but I went downstairs to take my test in Paolo’s class. There were 20 slide ID’s, 2 essay, 5 fill in the blank, and about 20 multiple choice. I think I did pretty well, although I can’t be entirely sure. I was the second one finished with the test and came back to my room and got back in bed hoping to sleep away all the bad and not think anymore for the time being. At 2:30pm I got up and got dressed and went to stone carving. I rather enjoy stone carving. There’s nothing like banging on rocks to soothe yourself and get it all out. After stone carving I came back to the center and wondered around aimlessly with nothing to do. I wondered in and out of the other schools studio’s talking to a few people here and there and enjoying their work. After a while I went upstairs and collected my movies from some people who had borrowed them before knocking on Jen’s door. I don’t know why I went to see Jen really; I guess I just felt like talking to her. So we hung out for about an hour and a half till dinner just talking and me keeping her company while she washed clothes. Apparently I showed up at just the right time. Jen gives really good hugs, and after the day I’d been having I needed one, so that was nice. Dinner was good; I sat with my usual crowd which includes Daniel, The Trio, and Jon usually. (Just incase I haven’t mentioned The Trio before it consists of Elisha, Jacquie, and Katherine who are practically inseparable.) We enjoyed ourselves and again Katherine and I shared some wine, this time we actually decided to get 2 bottles, she’d had a long day too, and in the end I had about 4 ½ glasses. Not much really, I didn’t even feel tipsy. After dinner Katherine, Daniel, Jon and I chatted while we all sipped on wine and had a nice time. Afterwards, I came to my room and decided I’m going to watch Under The Tuscan Sun tonight so I can finally understand what’s going on. About 5 minutes into the movie gets pretty depressing so I decided to hold off for a while and see if Jen wants to watch it with me after she finished Conversation - something that happens Tuesday nights with some local Italians. I plan to finish it whether she wants to or not and then probably call it an early night since tomorrow is field trip day. That’s all for now hopefully tomorrow in Florence will be a good day. We’re going to two famous museums and I’m going to get to see The David among many other famous pieces of art. Ciao!

Awww... I Miss Camryn!

Sorry, but Nikita was just telling me how she was playing with Camryn today! Anyway... So where did we leave off? Ah yes, Saturday night. Yeah, I didn’t do much of anything else after journaling, I think I went to bed around 2am… but I could be mistaken, in the immortal words of my mother – “I’ve slept since then.”

10April2005 – Sunday

Sunday I got up around 2pm or maybe 3. (Today has been a long day…) I went straight to studio and worked on the project due Monday (today) until about 6:30pm. After that I’d had just about enough working on projects and whatnot and went to my room. I found Daniel who was also burnt out on studying for his Italian test so we decided that an hours worth of ping pong would be just about right to get us ready for dinner. So we played ping pong for about an hour and just to let you all know how I stand. Well, I suck. I haven’t won a single game of ping pong in my life from what I can remember; of course I haven’t played in like 10 years or something. So we go to dinner and Katherine, who is someone I’ve spoken very little of but have been spending quite a large amount of time with as of late, introduced me to sparkling white wine. Ladies and gentlemen, I have finally found a wine that I like; my trip to Italy isn’t going to be wine-less after all. She shared a bottle with me and it was quite good actually. After dinner I went to studio to work some more on my project and found Marcel in there talking to some people. When he was finished I grabbed him for a second to get him to talk to me and make sure I was going in somewhat the right direction and honestly, I couldn’t tell. The problem with professors, especially architecture professors, is that they can be so incredibly vague it makes you want to use an X-Acto knife it a way it definitely shouldn’t - but that is neither here nor there. The only thing I really got from him was his alarm that I was working alone on the project. Let me explain… so far this semester we started out on individual projects, then we worked our way up to a 3 person team project, then we combined 3 teams of 3 to make a 9 team project. That was the master plan that was due last Monday. Now then, Thursday they decided to assign us a project that was due Monday that we were to work with in our groups of 3. So for anyone not paying attention it goes 1, 3, 9, 3, and eventually starting Thursday I’m sure, we will be back to individual projects to finish out the semester. So why was I working alone? Thursday as you will recall, if you’re up to date on my journal, I had to leave studio early to go to the doctor. Well, because of that I never had a chance to speak with my group during class and I never saw them again after class and Friday morning before I awoke, the two other members of my team got on a plane to Barcelona for the weekend. Now, you should be caught up. So Marcel was obviously alarmed at my working alone on this phase of the project so I asked if he thought I should ask Katherine if she wanted to team up – her two teammates were in Barcelona as well and as far as I knew she hadn’t started this phase yet at all. He sounded somewhat like he thought it might be a good idea, so after he left me to my misery I decided to go in search of Katherine to see what she thought of the idea. Well after looking around the entire complex and knocking on her door to no avail, I had no idea where she was. At this point I decided that working alone was better than not working at all and decided to go down to the bar to get a cappuccino and the included caffeine boost to get me started on what looked to be a long night in studio. After my cappuccino I checked my e-mail and as I did so the power to the entire complex went out. The only thing we could see was the 4 emergency lights in the whole place and the light coming from obscure lights outside. At this point I guess I should say that it was raining all day Sunday and as the night had progressed the winds had picked up increasingly and at that point all we could hear was banging outside – this was to continue for the remainder of the night but only get worse. So here I was, wired on caffeine that my body isn’t used to because I try to stay away from the stuff – ergo I’m extremely wired, and the power is out and doesn’t seem to be coming back any time soon. Later I saw Marco in the hall and he confirmed this suspicion as he is the complex electrical fixer guy. At this point I will just finish by saying that the night was extremely long and I didn’t end up going to sleep until some time after 4am. The winds never died down but only got worse (someone said today that a guy in town has lived here for like 60 years and had never ever experienced anything like it and also said it was because the Pope died, but that’s just his theory, lol!) and I spent the entire evening sitting alone in random rooms of the building or walking about the building alone thinking to myself, praying, and trying to gain some perspective on my life – although I couldn’t say if anything came of that attempt right now.

11April2005 – Monday

I woke at 9:30am and was going to get in the shower until I found it ice cold and with no heat insight. Cancel that… I spent the next hour to hour and a half getting a package ready to be sent home and then having my first experience with the postal service in Italy – it went quite well actually! By the time I was finished I went to studio and had absolutely no motivation to work on anything so I decided to throw in the towel and go get comfortable for lunch in 20 minutes. I ate a very meager lunch because I wasn’t thrilled with my dining option (I can’t eat pink and white sausage…) and after I was feeling very sick to my stomach for some reason (I am feeling better in the sinus infection area though for anyone wondering!) so I took a nap until time for studio. I felt a little better after my nap and made my way down to studio to work. I refined what I had been working on a little and then suddenly my group appeared and Andrew told me he had designed everything on the train, not to fear, and all we needed to do was draw it closer to scale. Aw heck, works for me, I hadn’t figured anything good out. So for the next hour they told me everything they had figured out and we re-drew it before we had a lecture that Peter had set up for 5:30pm. So I decided to go to this lecture and that is where I went wrong… The lecturer had a very thick Greek accent and I didn’t understand but 4 words the entire hour and a half I was in there and he showed nothing but random slides of streets and building groupings, and other urban scenes. I snuck out at 7:15pm and went down to dinner. This time I bought the wine and shared it with Katherine as thanks for the night before and dinner was pretty good. After dinner I got online and checked my e-mail and then went upstairs and watched Bourne Supremacy. When that was over I came down here and, well, here I am. Tomorrow I have a test that I’ve studied quite scarcely for, but I never study and always do fine, so I’m not especially concerned. As for tonight, well, it’s now midnight, so the night is mostly over, I’ll probably be online a bit longer before going to bed. I love and miss you all and hope you are enjoying reading this stuff.
Ciao!

Twice The Pizza And Ping Pong

Last night I did end up going to eat at Regiro’s, but it was about 8:30pm. I ended up eating 2 pizzas I was so hungry, lol! After we were there about 2 hours we came back and I watched the last half of The Village that some people were watching, and then we watched Harold And Kumar Go To Whitecastle. It was really freaking hilarious, and I had a good time. After that I got online for a few hours before going to sleep.

Today I woke up at about 1pm and took a nice long shower and got dressed and then decided to go downstairs in work in the studio. I probably started working on a drawing between 2:30 and 3 and didn’t finish till right about 7pm. I did finish it though, and I’m happy with it. After I finished I played ping pong with Daniel before dinner. Then we ate and had a nice dinner and some fun conversation after till probably 8:30ish then Daniel and I played ping pong some more till about 10pm. Then I came up here and got online and read an e-mail from my mom, and decided to update this here journal since its obviously pretty short. I don’t plan on doing much else the remainder of the day and tomorrow I’m going to work on studio some more and study for my test on Tuesday a little. Okay, well until tomorrow, same Bat Man time, same Bat Man place!

The One With The Catchy Title

After the last post I didn’t end up doing much besides watching Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom before going to sleep around 2am-ish. It does feel good to be sleeping at night when I’m supposed to be, so far so good!

07April2005 – Thursday

Thursday I woke up right before class and threw on some clothes, brushed my teeth, and snuck into the back of class a little late. We had a guest lecturer who lectured about philosophy and its connection to everything we’ve been studying so far and I found it extremely interesting. This guy had my complete attention the entire class which is only slightly peculiar. (I do try to be interested, I assure you.) After that class was lunch and then after lunch we were supposed to have a group picture, but instead there were at least 5-10 people not here and it was postponed till next Tuesday. I found out during lunch that if you blow your nose and everything that comes out is bright green that that means you have a sinus infection. Somehow I was unaware of this although it is apparently quite common knowledge. Well I have been blowing bright green for at least 2 and a half weeks now, so I figured sinus infection might be a good reason to go to the doctor. So I made the proper arrangements after lunch and then took a nap till it was time for studio. I got up right when class starts because I doubted it would matter if I was late, and as I expected, I was the first one there and class didn’t start till around 3:45pm. So we “discussed” the next phase of our project, and by “discussed” I do mean argue. Finally some terms and conditions were agreed upon by all, and when I had to leave to go to the doctor things were beginning to get ironed out by the class. So I left because I had to and made my way to the doctor’s office, which really isn’t that far from the center, where I proceeded to wait for about an hour and a half for a 10 minute examination by a doctor who spoke almost no English and I’m hoping was able to accurately diagnose my problem. So 30 Euro later I walked away with 5 days worth of sample drugs and a prescription for what I think is cough syrup. When I got back I decided to get online and do random little odds and ends such as writing an e-mail and checking e-mail. Not too long after it was time for dinner and I went to eat. However my stomach wasn’t feeling quite up to par and after a piece of bread and a plate of pasta I was finished well before the main course. So I retired to my room where I decided to get my laptop and go downstairs to get online – gotta beat the after dinner crowd. Well I ended up being online for the remainder of the night and afterwards I went upstairs and watched Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade to round out my Indiana Jones marathon before going to sleep around 4am.

08April2005 – Friday

I am afraid there isn’t much to report today although I have been somewhat productive. I woke up right before lunch and straggled downstairs for it. We have been having a bit of trouble sleeping as of late because for the last week, and what appears to be for the remainder of our stay at this point, some workers have been busy digging up the street outside the center and there is an extremely large, extremely loud, compressor that is parked right under our window that serves some purpose to them. Anyway, so I ate lunch and had pleasant conversation then after those of that remain at the center this weekend (somehow there aren’t many) made our way to the computer lab where we all fiddled about for a few hours. When I left Daniel and I had booked our hostel for next weekend and a trip we are planning. We are going to something called Cinque Terre (chink-wa terray) that I don’t really know how to describe. Daniel said it’s similar to the French Riviera but I’m not sure that is quite accurate. Basically there are a group of islands with nice sandy beaches and lots of hiking trails that we are going to be lounging about on for 2 days relaxing in the sun and playing at the beach. Daniel plans to do some hiking, but I think I may just stay on the beach; I miss the beach something terrible. So anyway that is our grand master plan for next weekend which also happens to be JereBeth’s Birthday on Saturday. It bums me out to not be able to be there with her when she turns 20, but I’ll be celebrating with her in spirit while I bask in the sun I suppose… Just for those of you wondering, this whole thing was Daniel’s idea and I was very much peer-pressured into it, lol! Darn my friends! After I left the lab I ran into Marcel and had him fill me in on what I had missed yesterday in studio and he obliged. We discussed the project and I feel pretty confident in my knowledge of what’s expected of me for Monday. So after I discussed those things with him, he left, and I decided I may as well get started. So I worked for a couple of hours on some things and then about an hour ago I decided to take a break and work on the old journal here. Right now it’s about 7:15pm and I would be getting ready for dinner except that tonight they aren’t serving dinner and instead are serving it tomorrow. (It’s a long story and really insignificant so don’t worry much please.) So instead a group of us are going to go eat dinner tonight at Regiro’s somewhere around 8. After dinner I’m not sure what I’ll do, but I feel a movie of some kind will most likely be involved, and possibly some online time. Well that is all for now, I’ve very much enjoyed all of the e-mails everyone has been sending (I’ve gotten 5 so far this week!) and the comments left on my journal. I knew you guys could figure that one out, lol! Keep ‘em coming because it looks to be a long weekend. I was planning to go to Florence and maybe do a little souvenir shopping tomorrow, but I just checked my bank account and with next weekend’s trip coming up and the state it is in now, I don’t think ill be doing much shopping at all, lol! I’m not worried though, I’m sure everything will be fine. I’m actually pretty proud of myself for having made it to the very last 4 weeks without any money problems. That’s really all I have, so Ciao!

Under The Tuscan Sun... Quite Literally

I did eat dinner last night, I did watch Gladiator, and I most definitely did feel worse that night...

06April2005 - Wednesday

Today we went to Pienza. Last night I took a shower before I went to bed because on field trip days there is absolutely no hot water in the mornings and I learned this lesson pretty fast. So this morning Daniel got up to get in the shower at 7 and I woke up to his alarm. After he got in and a laid there for a few minutes not wanting to move, I finally managed to pull myself out of bed. I got dressed and all that good stuff and after he was finished in the bathroom I took care of business in there. When I was finished I had some time left because we didn’t have to be at the bus till 8:30am so I went downstairs and checked e-mail and stuff. I made it to the bus in plenty of time and managed to find a comfortable seat and settle in. Halfway there the guy behind be threw up which freaked me out a little because I wasn’t feeling so hot myself. We finally got there and visited a pretty cool renaissance church. Then we hiked all the way up the hill in time to visit a bar for a bottle of water before Paolo was telling us to hurry up and get back down the hill because the bus was leaving in 25 minutes… huh? This isn’t where we are spending the day? Apparently we had made a stop on the way to Pienza to see these two churched and a winery. So I quickly popped into the church at the top of the hill and snapped a few pictures, then went down the hill and popped into the winery momentarily (I’m not all that interested in wine...) before making my way down the hill and back to the bus… where I waited for another 20 minutes… Oh-well, no big deal. So then we went to Pienza and a short walk from the bus we were actually there. This church was kind of dull on the outside, but gorgeous on the inside. We also saw a little courtyard that was kind of interesting, and then went to lunch at this restaurant Paolo was taking us to. He boasted it to have the best lasagna you’d ever have and I’m a heck of a fan, so I was ready. Well it was absolutely delicious and a couple of hours later we left the restaurant stuffed like a thanksgiving turkey. It wasn’t long before we all found this nice little street behind the restaurant that had a wall running all the way along one side and was perfectly presented with the most beautiful sun. And what do college kids do when that first beautiful day of spring hits? Well they bask in the sun lazily and do nothing of course! So there we were probably a good 20-25 lounging all over this pedestrian walkway and wall. There was an incredible view of the valley and the sun was magnificent and we easily wasted a few hours doing nothing but laying around and being silly. After I’d had enough sunning I ventured back onto the main street. I found a few other people outside one of the gellateria’s in town and decided that gelato sounded superb. So a scoop of gelato later I was feeling nice and wandered through Pienza aimlessly with Jason (arch not all-major) and we ducked in and out of just about every shop in town. (Pienza is pretty tiny, so it wasn’t that big of a deal and only took about 45 minutes to do.) After we finished our window shopping we headed to the bus as it was time to go and then we came home. I got back and organized my pictures from the day and then went to dinner. It was okay, but I didn’t eat too much because I was still pretty satisfied from lunch. After dinner I watched Indiana Jones and the Lost Arc and then came down here to the lab. That’s about all I have for today and tomorrow I have two classes and not much to do. So… perhaps I shall update again. I still feel pretty cruddy if anyone was wondering, but I am trying to make the best of things despite it... I miss you all and hope you are having a good week.
Ciao!

One Last Thing For The Night...

I forgot one last thing, for those of you that have mentioned Rome, here is the situation. I was planning on going until tonight. At dinner the professors made an announcement to us about this weekend. Apparently the government keeps the center informed on things, or else they have some other connection, but we were told the following. Right now there are an estimated 2 million Italian Catholics in Rome and in the next 24 hours an estimated additional 2 million Polish Catholics will be taking every means of transportation available to get to Rome. By this weekend, including inhabitants of Rome, these visitors, and other Italians within a close proximity to Rome, there will be an estimates 4 to 5 million people in Rome. There have been a few people from the center who ventured there this last weekend and they reported the lines to take at least 7 hours to get into St. Peters for a 30 second viewing of the body and as of tomorrow the casket will be closed anyway. One of the Resident Advisors went to Rome today and said that the lines were in excess of 14 hours and that the trains were already ridiculous on the way down - there was standing room only and it was overflowing. Furthermore one of the main airports in Rome has been shut down for the next 1000 hours and is for the explicit use of diplomats and other VIP's only, which has killed a lot of people here's weekend plans. So, having been told all of this I have decided that it is not near worth the time, possible theft, or energy to waste my time even attempting to get near Vatican City this weekend. I believe Saturday morning they are transporting the body to Poland for official burial. So anyway, while I'm sure this may disappoint some of you who were hoping I would take advantage of this historical time and my present situation, I'm sorry, but it just isn't worth it to me. I hope you understand. Bonne Serra!

Still Sick, Still Sleeping... So Far...

Ah, this is unusual, a journal entry in the middle of the week?

04April2005 - Monday

9 hours! Ha Ha! Yes that is correct; I slept an entire 9 hours! I went to bed at 2am and woke up at 11am. After waking I lazily did nothing really before lunch then went and had lunch, then took a half hour nap before getting dressed and showered, etc. After this we had presentations for the project we’ve been working for about a month, well only actually working for about 2 weeks. Anyway we had presentations and I felt that they went pretty well. After that I got on line for a little while and chitchatted before dinner. Then dinner came along and I started feeling a little better for the day and after dinner I we had a meeting with studio to determine the winner of the little competition that our presentations were to determine. Well my group won the competition in a round about way, so obviously we did do pretty well with the presentation and the project in general - at least some aspects of it anyway. After the meeting I spent the rest of the night curled up in one of the big chairs here in the lab talking to JereBeth before heading to sleep around 12:30am here.

05April2005 – Tuesday

Well… Not quite 9 hours this time around… I believe I woke up around 6am completely awake after some rather strange dreams. I actually felt pretty good this morning. I felt refreshed from my short sleep, I felt like I slept pretty well, and I was feeling relatively un-sickly. Seeing that it was still relatively early back in The States (in college student time that is) I decided to venture downstairs to talk to JereBeth for a few hours before she retired for the night. Once she went to sleep I wrote her a short e-mail and then went upstairs. I wasn’t feeling well anymore really, actually I was feeling much worse, so my optimism for the day quickly faded. I went straight to work writing my paper that was due at 11:15am in my first class of the day and was quite impressed with myself when I wrote a 2 page paper (that’s one page front and back handwritten) feeling extremely cruddy the entire time and completely unmotivated. So after I finished it was almost class time and I went down and turned my paper in – that’s right, on time and before class! Well during class I started feeling much worse. My stomach was in knots and I felt like I would vomit at any given second. So when class finally ended I was quite relieved to retire to my room and bed. Feeling the way I felt at that time in no way invited lunch only a short 15 minutes away, so I decided to give a nap a try before my next class. So I set my alarm and drifted off to sleep slowly. After an hour some loud machinery outside my window woke me up and I was surprised at how well id slept for that hour, I turned over and went back to sleep though as I still had another hour and it was quite obvious in those waking moments that I was not well yet at all. An hour later my alarm went off and I did not want to get up. But it’s very hard for me to skip a class and I only have 4 left in my stone carving class as it is, so I decided to make an effort to attend, I go dressed and made the hike down the hill to class and tried to work on things, although it was very hard to concentrate. After a few hours I was exhausted from a combination of still feeling sick as all get out and the effort that goes into chipping away at stone, so when Jon decided he was going back it was music to me ears and I quickly joined his side. We had a nice discussion about fuel, technology, and the beautiful day on the hike back up and the warm sun had improved my mood drastically, however I still feel awful. I decided to go ahead an update my journal because for some odd reason I felt inspired to do so, and also found myself with a few hours of free time and nothing to do, so that is where I currently am. After I finish this entry I don’t have any plans for the remainder of the evening at all. Dinner is later, but I’m not sure how I’ll be feeling about food when it rolls around so I’m not sure if I’ll be in attendance. Honestly I’d like nothing more than to take my mind off how I feel for the rest of the night, so there is a possibility I might occupy my visual senses with some movie going. There’s usually one about every night nowadays and id really like to borrow Gladiator from one of the guys here and watch it in the near future so I may end up doing both of those before the night is over. Those are really the only ideas I have, but I have to be at the bus at 8:30am tomorrow morning for our field trip to Pienza (have no clue where that is) so I may try and turn in early as well. I don’t know why, but I don’t foresee my stomach feeling any better anytime in the near future, so I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a rather miserable day. Well feel free to e-mail me if you like or post any comments you’d like and we’ll see if I’m in the mood to update tomorrow as well. I love and miss everyone back home and would like to just say hello to my new readers for the fun of it. Brother Dave, I missed you and I am glad you are back in The States! =)

Ciao!

Take That Insomnia! SMACK! FWOP! BANG!

I know it's been a week since I last updated, but none the less, here it is!

28March2005 – Monday

Not really a whole lot to tell about Monday. We had studio and discussed our project to some great lengths within our group and then worked on our project to some great lengths within our group. The only real thing I guess I can report is that I still had Insomnia pretty bad and that night I had gone to sleep around 6am and got up at about 2pm.

______________________________________

29March2005 – Tuesday

Again a rather monotonous day, went to class as usual, turned in my paper on time – as unusual, ate food, took a nap, went to stone carving – had a pretty good time and started my “final” project… went to dinner… ah, yes, Tuesday night I devoted most of the night to studio and helped Marcus work on our model before having another attack of Insomnia which I spent online and went to bed around 4am I think.

______________________________________

30March2005 – Wednesday

I awoke at about 7:15ish to get ready for our field trip and then run to the bus which we were supposed to be at by 8am. I made myself comfortable next to Jason (from architecture, not all-major) and we spent the better part of two hours talking about random things and having a pretty good time. Finally we arrived in Terni which, let me tell you, is one of my favorite places we’ve gone yet. Terni is a very industrial Italian city and the architecture is very post war/modern. I loved it. As we walked through the streets and various squares I kept thinking to myself how it was exactly what I had been expecting an Italian city to look like. Finally, I was in the “Italian City” of my anticipation. I enjoyed myself until Peter began our 5 mile hike through an old park, around some old school and up this somewhat sketchy* street and through a maze of other streets to this housing complex that was supposed to be a big deal. It was okay I guess, it was all concrete and very modern, I wasn’t too impressed… but apparently the amazing thing was the labyrinth of gardens and terraces that snaked through the complex at various levels. Anyway so we got back on the bus at what was now after 1pm (all starving to death mind you) and started our hour long journey to Perusia. We finally arrived in Perusia but then had to circle the entire city because the bus driver had accidentally passed our turn off to park and the bus is so huge that we had to go all the way around and try again… anyway we finally got to the turn which he had passed by about a millimeter and go to our parking stop. Then we have to take this series of escalators up the mountain to the top (which is a hell of a lot better than hiking straight up that mile or two). When we finally got to the top Peter released us to go in search of food and fun for the next hour and a half before meeting again to finish our tour for the day. Well we were all ravenous and some of the girls new of this fantastic place to eat so we hurriedly walked through the city and main piazza to the little place which was closing in 5 minutes… bummer. So we split up into smaller groups and went in search of some reasonably prices establishments and I think all ended up at the same Pizzeria and Café. We didn’t end up eating till after 3 and while it wasn’t the best, it was pretty good and was definitely sustenance. So after eating we looked through the chocolate shops (because Perusia is famous for its chocolate) and found them all to be ridiculously over priced before meeting at our designated place on these nice big steps where we all basked in the warm sun until the Profs finally arrived – late as usual. We than began the 4 mile hike downhill (which was nice) and weaving all over the place because Peter had no idea where he was going – also as usual. He ended up stopping about 3 times to ask for directions before we finally found the place and I wasn’t all that impressed. It had a cool fountain waterfall thing, but other than that the buildings looked very un-proportional and I just wasn’t a fan. Anyway her we had an assignment, which was to “finish” it. Apparently they thought that the square was incomplete and gave us a half an hour to sketch our remedy to this problem. In the end I quickly decided on an outdoor amphitheater to taint the green space but we all agreed that the green space was perfect as it was. Perhaps it needed some landscaping, but none of us felt that the precious vegetation and life of the space should be destroyed just to erect another mis-proportioned building… anyway they thought that was fine and we had about 10 minutes before the bus was going to get there. Lucky for us there was a Co-Op literally right under us, so I stopped in there to get a few items I had been needing before embarking on our journey home. I slept all the way home (about an hour) and then we went to dinner and what not, but I didn’t eat as I was still full from eating only 3 to 4 hours earlier. I ended up spending another night in studio working on the model with Marcus and other various tasks that needed doing. Before another attack of Insomnia and forcing myself to go to sleep around 2am to get up again at 7 for Thursdays field trip.

*The term "sketchy" is now being used by us crazy kids to describe places or things that arent of the highest quality. I believe it originated in some of the preppier more North-Eastern schools back in The States.

31March2005 – Thursday

Like I just said, I got up at 7 and ended up at the bus on time by some miracle and this time I had a seat to myself somehow. So I napped and jammed on the way to Siena before we got off and hiked to our meeting point. There we split up into groups and I was chitchatting with Melanie our TA. At some point as the group was leaving Andrea came by and told us that Marcel’s wife was in line for the restroom and it was a long one and someone should wait for her, so we told her to go tell Marcel that and we stood by to wait. Well we waited and waited and waited… finally Melanie went down to the restroom and called her name into it with no response. Great, so we were now totally separated from the group and honestly, didn’t mind much so we decided we’d jus do our own thing for the day and started to try and find the sights on the list. We found the first and the second before running into the group of All-Major students from A&M and decided to tag along with them because Melanie finds Paolo extremely interesting and he was the one giving the tour. This was fine and dandy for me because I got to hang out with all the cool All-Majors kids and had a good time with Jen, Diego, Lauren, Wes, Daniel, etc, etc, etc… So we went to some more sights, the most fun being the top of this unfinished façade that we had to climb not one, but two flights of circular stairs that were about as wide as I am and pretty steep. It was a lot of fun and we all just about died doing it, but the view was amazing. We could see all of Siena and the surrounding country side and mountains and it was beautiful. Obviously lots of people took this opportunity for photos and such, before we started our decent which was much faster and extremely dizzying. At this point we were on our own to go find food and somehow going down the stairs I lost my group and when I left the museum I was all alone in a piazza with no one in sight. I looked around for a moment to no avail before Beau came out and had the same puzzled look on his face. We were really confused as to how we’d become abandoned and decided to search out anyone we could for a while. Soon enough we gave up and decided to search out food instead and somehow during our search we found our group and no food, lol. So then all of us continued the search (these tourist cities are expensive as heck) and finally found a little underground pub boasting hot sandwiches for 3 Euro. So we decided on that and Daniel, 3 girls, and I settled into a booth to dine. It was pretty good and Daniel and I both had two before we decided to leave. Of course when we were leaving it started pouring down rain and we were stuck. We still had like 4 hours before the bus was supposed to leave and had no idea what to do with the time. Eventually the rain let up a little and we decided to sprint to a coffee shop/pastry shop to kill some time and hide from the bad weather. Daniel and I finally got cabin fever and the rain had stopped so we decided to go window shopping with the other Lauren and Ara who we bumped into. I actually found a really nice short for only 26.50 Euro that I really liked, but decided not to spend my money. I found a patch for Siena eventually and we ended up waiting the last hour in the coolest most modern designed McDonalds I’ve ever seen. I got a pretty expensive milk shake which ended up being total crap and we finally made our way back to the bus. Again I slept home and then this time I ate dinner before devoting yet another evening to finishing the model and Insomnia.

01April2005 – Friday

I think I went to bed around 6am and slept a good part of the day before doing nothing the rest of it. I watched The Incredibles with a small group and then Insomnia struck again. (I'll get you yet you dastardly villian!)

02April2005 – Saturday

I decided Friday night that I was going to beat this Insomnia once and for all and I had already been awake a pretty long time. Well I only took a short nap for about 4 hours before getting up for the day. A had a leisurely day spent bumming around and bumming around online and was exhausted the whole day. Determined as I was though, I didn’t take any naps and stayed awake through dinner and some evening conversating with JereBeth before watching Shark Tale and eventually crashing about 12:30am.

03April2005 – Sunday

I did it! I slept through the night! Whoop! From 12:30am to 8:30am I slept. It wasn’t the best sleep and I woke up feeling like crap, but it was sleep and through the night when I was supposed to be sleeping. Well I got up and online to talk to JereBeth for about 2 hours before she went to sleep and I decided that I felt like absolute crap and headed back to my nice bed for a nap. I slept for about 4 hours and then got up showered and dressed and then sat on my bed feeling like crap… I ached all over and my head was killing me, so I decided my beautiful muscle relaxer and anti-inflammatory couldn’t be a bad idea so I downed one of each and came down here to the lab to do my journal entry for the week. It appears I’m going to end up writing this thing on Sundays from now on, just because that’s when I’ve been doing it, so I doubt any of you will mind too much. I did get an e-mail from Grandma in Abilene this week and was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly pleased with that, so everyone else feel free to jump on the bandwagon and start following suit. (Man I love my stockpile of clichés, lol) That’s all I have for now folks, I don’t plan on doing anything of importance for the rest of the day. Everyone left for the weekend to go skiing in Switzerland so tonight I think me and the 2 other people left here from our group of 9 are going to put the finishing touches on our project that’s due tomorrow. I’m going to eat dinner later and hope it’s good. I also plan to update my picture website and organize a disk of pictures to give to the person in charge of our “Semester Yearbook” (what a contradiction...) who has requested pictures from anyone willing. Yes Mother I am going to purchase one of these, so don’t fret. Also a fun little tidbit on the agenda is that someone has decided to organize a Santa Chiara Prom, lol! As if any of us have Formal clothes to wear! So no I’ve set down to narrowing the list of girls at Santa Chiara to who I intend to ask to this fun little event. It’s going to be a tough choice as it matters so much, lol! (Yes, that was sarcasm.) Alright, well that’s really all I have, and now I must say Adieu. E-mails, messages, comments on the blog, phone calls, packages, letters, etc, etc, are all more than welcome! I love you all, and hope to hear from you soon since I miss you ferociously!
